Rowling tells Carnegie Hall that Dumbledore was gay - Harry Potter Fan Zone

Tonight, the lucky winners of Scholastic's Open Book Tour sweepstakes congregated at New York's Carnegie Hall, where author J.K. Rowling read from chapter nineteen of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, answered sixteen questions, and signed a copy of Deathly Hallows for each attendee.

From the first report:

"First, the biggest revelation of the night came when Jo revealed to her audience the fact that Albus Dumbledore is gay and had fallen in love with fellow wizard and friend, Gellert Grindelwald. This, by no doubt, elicited the biggest reaction of the evening with many audience members gasping upon hearing the news. So much so, it promoted Jo to say:

"If I had know this would have made you so happy, I would have told you years ago."

She continued, explaining having to slip a note to the director, David Yates, during a script reading of the sixth film, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", when a small reference was made to "a girl Dumbledore was once attracted to" was in the script. In tune with the activities of many in her fandom, Jo also said this after revelation: "Just imagine the fan fiction now."

Love was also the answer Jo gave when she revealed that Neville Longbottom married Hufflepuff Hannah Abbott and she was to become the new land lady at the iconic Leaky Cauldron Pub. She thought the fact that Neville ended up living over a pub was particularly cool.

Equally earth shattering revelations were made concerning Petunia Dursley when Jo answered the question of what she could not bring herself to say when Harry and the Dursleys parted ways before his seventeenth birthday. She would have wished him luck, saying:

"I know what your up against and I hope it turns out okay."

Information on the original Order members was also revealed during tonight's event. Jo related the fact that Remus Lupin was unemployable as a werewolf before book three and upon his graduation from Hogwarts along with James and Lilly, James supported him on their own money. In addition to this she shed more light on the early days of the Order, saying James, Sirius, Remus and Lilly were full time Order members. "Full Time Fighters", as Jo put it.

Jo also went into further detail about the many portraits in the wizarding world and their occupants. An occupant can only move freely to other portraits in their dwelling or to another portrait in which they are depicted. She also revealed that Harry himself made sure that the portrait of Snape made it into the Headmasters Office, but doubts that he ever went to speak to it.

Life debts were another subject discussed during tonight's question and answer session. It was revealed that Draco Malfoy does not owe Harry a life debt. While speaking briefly on the Elder wand, Jo did not detail the the core of this extraordinary wand. Other revelations include such information as Hagrid was never married and James and Lilly went into hiding when she was first pregnant with Harry.

Speaking about her personal feelings and experiences of the past seventeen years with the boy wizard, Jo said finishing the first book and the seventh book produced very similar feelings. She also admits that she was very difficult to live with for the weeks following completing the last book in the "Harry Potter" series.

The Associated Press is running an article that has a few more details on how exactly the question of Dumbledore's sexuality came about. Read it at this link.

Newsweek has some more info on Hagrid not getting married:

In answer to the question "Did Hagrid marry?", Rowling replied that sadly, no. The half-giant had a flirtation with a giantess but she found him "a tad unsophisticated" and the relationship never went forward. In response to the audience's groans of dismay, Rowling said, jokingly, "O.K., I'll write another book." And when the audience continued to express disapproval added, "at least I didn't kill him."
