J.K. Rowling was at the International Festival of Authors in Toronto on Tuesday to wrap-up her Open Book Tour. Rowling began the day with an early morning press conference where she answered a number of questions relating to the books.
Before she began taking questions, a Vancouver environmental group
honored Rowling with the "Order of the Forest" award for encouraging her publishers to print on ancient forest friendly paper.
After the honor was bestowed, Rowling began taking questions from the media. As you can imagine, many reporters asked about Dumbledore being gay. Rowling said she knew "very early on" that he was gay, and defended her revelation by saying:
"It is what it is. He's my character, and as my character I have the right to know what I know about him and say what I say about him."
Rowling also told reporters about the
Harry Potter encyclopedia, trimming the epilogue down, what people should do to be successful writers, female protagonists, and more. You can watch the entire press conference
here.
Next, Rowling read from
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to 950 fans at the The Winter Garden Theatre. Following the reading, Rowling answered questions from the audience. The Canadian Press
writes:
"During the reading, Rowling was asked a number of questions about the books, but Dumbledore's sexuality didn't come up.
Instead she was asked whose death was the most difficult to write – Dobby the elf, came the reply – and about the complicated rules of the game of Quidditch.
Rowling joked that only a woman could have invented the game because it requires so much multi-tasking, prompting laughs from the assembled crowd, which included young children, teens and publishing industry movers and shakers.
She also joked that she came up with Quidditch after having a bitter argument with an ex-boyfriend, leading her to make the game quite violent.
When Rowling was asked what she'd be doing today if she wasn't famous, she replied that she'd still be teaching and writing in her spare time because she loves writing so much."
A few other tidbits from the Q&A can be read
at this link. As always, the Q&A was followed by a book signing, where all 950 fans got a brand-new copy of HPDH signed by the author herself.
