The German editions of the Harry Potter books feature some of the most distinctive interpretations of Harry’s world. Sabine Wilharm illustrated the original German editions in her unmistakable, exaggerated and angular style, while the adult and pocket editions use photographic, object-based iconography. Iacopo Bruno’s 20th anniversary editions and George Caltsoudas’ 2025 covers brought a new stylised visual identity to the series and rank among the most eye-catching modern international designs.
Philosopher’s Stone (Book 1)
Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen was first published in Germany in 1998, a year after the book’s original British release. The original children’s edition depicts the life-size chess match (the expression on the pieces is wonderful), which also appears on a number of international editions, including both the Chinese and Japanese.
The adult and pocket editions feature photographic and digital elements, such as winged keys and a Golden Snitch, while the 20th anniversary edition depicts the trio and an ornate Hogwarts Express train. (Interestingly, there’s a little Deathly Hallows symbol visible too.)
The 2025 re-release features a gorgeous depiction of Harry and Hedwig on Platform Nine and Three-Quarters with a steampunk-esque Hogwarts Express, a scene that appears on more book covers than we can shake a wand at.

Chamber of Secrets (Book 2)
Harry Potter und die Kammer des Schreckens was first published in 1999. The original children’s edition shows Harry and Fawkes in the Chamber of Secrets, a scene which is near ubiquitous (along with the flying Ford Anglia) on Chamber of Secrets cover art.
The adult and pocket editions feature, among other iconography, a snake. The adult editions also credit Rowling as ‘Joanne K Rowling’ rather than the usual ‘J.K. Rowling’, an unusual choice also found on the early Danish editions.
The 20th anniversary edition has a unique interpretation of both Dobby and Moaning Myrtle (the latter being rather rare on Chamber book covers), while the 2025 edition depicts the ghostly Deathday Party, an even rarer scene from the second book and one that was scrapped entirely from the film series.

Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3)
Harry Potter und der Gefangene von Askaban was first published in 1999. The original children’s edition shows Harry and Sirius Black as the Animagus dog Padfoot, as do both the adult and pocket editions, though the pocket edition depicts him as ‘The Grim’ in tea leaves.
The 20th anniversary edition features, among other iconography, the purple Knight Bus, an interesting depiction of the Sirius Black wanted poster (somewhat similar to the film version), Harry’s stag Patronus and an ornate Time-Turner. The 2025 edition depicts Harry flying on Buckbeak, an image which is featured on nearly every Azkaban book cover.

Goblet of Fire (Book 4)
Harry Potter und der Feuerkelch was first published in 2000. The original children’s edition shows Harry and the Hungarian Horntail during the First Task, an image which is incredibly popular on Goblet of Fire book covers. (Interestingly, Harry appears twice on the cover; this is the first of the original German editions to feature him both in the bottom corner and in the main illustration.) An unreleased alternate cover shows Harry during the underwater Second Task.
The adult edition features an abstract version of the same Horntail scene, while the pocket edition includes a Golden Egg and Mad-Eye Moody’s magical eye, against a maze illustration. The 20th anniversary edition shows the trio at the Quidditch World Cup and an interesting depiction of Mad-Eye Moody, while the 2025 edition takes us full circle with another First Task illustration.

Order of the Phoenix (Book 5)
Harry Potter und der Orden des Phönix was first published in 2003. The original children’s edition shows the trio, Ginny, Luna and Neville in the Department of Mysteries, which is very similar to the original US cover. An unreleased alternate cover shows the final Ministry of Magic battle. The adult edition shows the night sky and a row of houses, likely a nod to Grimmauld Place, while the pocket edition includes nods to the prophecy, Educational Decrees and the Ministry of Magic flying memos.
The 20th anniversary edition includes illustrations of both Umbridge and Bellatrix, two characters who have very different visual interpretations across a number of international book covers. The 2025 edition shows Harry and Arthur Weasley entering the Ministry of Magic via the red magical telephone box.

Half-Blood Prince (Book 6)
Harry Potter und der Halbblutprinz was first published in 2005. Illustrator Sabine Wilharm designed two potential covers, with the final artwork chosen by almost 200,000 fans in an online vote. The winning cover (with more than 70% of the fan vote) shows Harry and Dumbledore travelling across the underground lake by boat, a scene that is synonymous with Half-Blood Prince cover designs, while the unreleased alternate cover showed the climactic Astronomy Tower scene.
The adult edition depicts a book, likely a nod to Advanced Potion-Making, while the pocket edition includes a cauldron and potion bottles. The 20th anniversary edition includes illustrations of both Draco Malfoy and Ginny Weasley, while the 2025 edition shows Dumbledore casting a ring of fire in the cave, an almost identical scene to the original UK cover artwork (though this one includes a number of Inferi).

Deathly Hallows (Book 7)
Harry Potter und die Heiligtümer des Todes was first published in 2007. Like its predecessor, the original children’s edition cover was chosen by fan vote and features Harry and Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest. A version of the novel with the alternate cover, an illustration of the Room of Requirement Horcrux scene, was released as a limited 100-copy print run, with each copy signed by Wilharm.
The adult edition features a sword and a doe, while the pocket edition shows a Golden Snitch and the same Silver Doe Patronus. The 20th anniversary edition features imagery of Snape and Luna Lovegood, while the 2025 edition shows the trio breaking out of Gringotts on the Ukrainian Ironbelly Dragon, a scene also depicted on the deluxe version of the original US release and the 2013 US children’s edition.
